Lisa Stokes (b.1967) is a british artist based in Plymouth, UK. She spent her childhood on a South Devon farm. At college she studied Graphic Design and later moved to London to work as a Medical Artist.
Returning to Devon in 1990 she met the Plymouth based painter R.O. Lenkiewicz, who she trained with and sat for until his death in 2002.
In 2003 she had her first solo show at Plymouth Arts Centre, then two more successful shows in 2006 and 2008 at John Martin Gallery, London.
She has had her work selected for various exhibitions including the BP Portrait Award: National Portrait Gallery, The Hunting Art Prize: Royal College of Art and the London Art Fair. Her work is in the Ruth Borchard Collection and in many private collections in the UK and internationally.
Stokes’ work explores the feelings of loss; of physical and emotional experiences when something is destroyed, forgotten or hidden. She draws inspiration from her life, her childhood and her relationships with others. The work is small scale to large, mainly in oil. More recently using oil with graphite, but she is exploring new ways of working constantly.
