Works by artists spanning a period of more than 350 years, from Old Masters to contemporary figures, are displayed together to explore the artistic, social and political forces that have played an important role in forming successive generations’ perceptions of the countryside.
ACS members Stanley Spencer, Graham Sutherland, Peter Kennard and Edward Burra are among many artists whose work is shown to provoke reflection on these forces and to examine the manner in which artists have shaped our vision of rural life and landscape, whilst also offering a new perspective by looking at its expression in contemporary art. The range of artworks on display offer a particularly broad spectrum of responses to this ‘green and pleasant land’.
