The exhibition titled, ‘Make Shift’, highlights Freeman Bentley’s latest series of paintings and works on paper produced while on location in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Serving as a continuation of the artist’s investigation into the false themes and feelings manufactured on film sets, Freeman Bentley’s 2024 artworks situate viewers inside an ornately decorated historical house-turned-museum.
Disorienting perspectives and skewed depths are created by the recurring use of the mirror motif in each work, while the ever-multiplying paintings depicted in ‘Vanity of vanities’ (2024) provide a personal critique of the ACS member’s own work:
‘A number of artworks in the painting are images of my own works, resembling key moments in my development as a painter. Vanity of Vanities becomes an evermore self conscious reflection on the growth and development of an artistic process and the self esteem that can become intertwined in such an endeavour.’ – Anna Freeman Bentley
