Frank Auerbach: The Charcoal Heads
March 5, 2024
Frank Auerbach: The Charcoal Heads is currently on show at The Courtauld Gallery, London.

The exhibition brings together a remarkable series of Auerbach’s large-scale charcoal portraits, produced during the 1950s and 1960s. The portraits illustrate Auerbach’s intensely personal artistic process, each portrait bearing witness to the struggles both the artist and sitters overcame as they attempted to rebuild their lives in post-war London.

Each of the portraits was created over extended periods and multiple sessions, pushing the medium of charcoal to the very limits of its capabilities, as areas of patched-up paper and intense layering reveal the ACS member’s vigorous technique.
