Maggi Hambling Returns to the National Gallery
December 2, 2014

ACS member Maggi Hambling was the first Artist in Residence at the National Gallery and she returns there this winter with a new series of dramatic paintings. Never before seen in public and inspired by the crashing waves at Southwold in Hambling’s home county of Suffolk, the eight works on display are vast, intense and energetic and are accompanied by a smaller canvas painted in response to the death of Amy Winehouse.

“The one crucial thing that only painting can do is to make you feel as if you’re there while it’s being created – as if it’s happening in front of you.”
