William Gear: Prints and Other Works on Paper
February 17, 2017
The Fosse Gallery presents a major exhibition of work by ACS artist William Gear. Held in association with the Redfern Gallery, the exhibition features a large variety of prints and other works on paper produced between 1949 and 1988.

The artist first experimented with lithographic printmaking while visiting Paris in the late 1940s, but is thought to have found the technical elements restricting. The artist’s experimentation with silk-screen printing, initially on a rudimentary frame made with cotton cut from a dress, is explored in the exhibition alongside later examples of relief and screen-printing which helped mark his position as a pioneer of the medium – which, by the Redfern Gallery’s own admission, struggled to be accepted as a ‘valid artistic medium’ at the time.
