UK x New Zealand Artist's Resale Right Reciprocity
December 3, 2024

The Artists' Collecting Society (ACS) is delighted to announce that the UK’s Intellectual Property Office has just confirmed UK nationals are now eligible for Artist’s Resale Right (ARR) royalties generated from secondary sales that take place in New Zealand.

As part of the UK – New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, UK nationals will, from 1 December 2024, receive royalties when their eligible works are resold in New Zealand. It also means that eligible New Zealanders will receive royalty payments when their works are resold in the United Kingdom.

The formal recognition of reciprocity between the two countries represents the second such milestone in the development of ARR this year.

“We at the Artists’ Collecting Society are delighted that the Artist’s Resale Right continues to expand internationally. We are extremely pleased on behalf of the artists and the artists’ estates which we represent that New Zealand has introduced ARR domestically and has entered a reciprocal agreement with the UK.

We hope that the expansion of ARR in the UK for Australians and New Zealanders this year is just the beginning of greater international recognition of the rights of artists and artists’ estates.” – Harriet Bridgeman, Chairman of ACS.
