A pioneering figure of British abstraction and prominent member of the St Ives group, the exhibition highlights Barns-Graham’s engagement with the natural world, from Cornish seascapes to volcanic terrains and northern coastlines. Works from the artist’s ‘Mirage’ series of the 1970s, which lend the exhibition its title, reflect an enduring fascination with light, rhythm and stratification in landscape.
‘Mirage’ marks the gallery’s inaugural solo showcase of Barns-Graham’s work, ahead of forthcoming major surveys at Museum Belvedere in the Netherlands and at Tate St Ives.
