Bringing together paintings, ceramics and bronze sculpture, ‘A Ballad’ draws on the ACS member’s recent research into whale communication and oceanic sound. After undergoing throat surgery which left the artist temporarily unable to speak, Seibæk was drawn to the story of a whale whose unusually high-pitched song could not be heard by other marine mammals. Using this unexpected kinship between artist and animal as a point of departure, the exhibition expands into a wider exploration of communication, isolation and environmental loss, translating whale recordings and scientific data into abstract forms.
